As part of the Year 11 Citizenship course, 27 students who study either Citizenship, History or both visited London. Staff and pupils boarded the train from Wigan and enjoyed the journey down to London Euston where we boarded the Underground to Trafalgar Square. After some quick pictures and some information on the Battle of Trafalgar, we visited Buckingham Palace to enjoy the sights and grab some selfies with the guards. The group walked down to Parliament Square and Downing Street before we stopped for lunch with a view of Big Ben. After we entered the Houses of Parliament, pupils experienced a guided tour of both the House of Commons and House of Lords as well as Westminster Palace. The tour provided lots of information that linked with AHS’s KS3 and KS4 History curriculum as well as the workings of the Legislature that KS4 Citizenship pupils have been studying. Following the tour, the pupils met the Member of Parliament (MP) for Leigh and Atherton and enjoyed a Q&A session before working in teams to come up with their own campaign (this is something Y11 Citizenship pupils also do as part of their GCSE course). After the tour it was time to jump back on the Tube to Euston with a quick stop for a well-deserved burger for tea!
