As part of our enrichment offering at Atherton, Chess Club has proven to be exceptionally popular and continues to grow. We strongly believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to learn new skills and be exposed to a wide variety of experiences. Chess offers this in abundance.
Welcoming students and staff from all backgrounds and differing ability levels, from beginners to the more skilled and competitive players, chess allows those involved to learn new skills, develop problem solving and strategic planning skills and form new friendships. The club is an excellent way for staff and students to socialise in a friendly environment with like-minded individuals.
Last year we held a chess competition that saw entrants compete in knock-out stages and we crowned our first Atherton Chess Champion, James (currently year 10), who took on staff and students alike to conquer the title.
We are extremely excited to announce that in the coming weeks, we will be launching a chess league, which will be played over the next term. Competitors will earn points for playing games and hopefully, by Easter, we will see if James can remain at the top and retain his title for another year. It will be a hard, fought out competition and we are all super excited to see if our developing players, have what it takes to snatch his crown this year.
Chess club is on a Wednesday from 3pm until 4pm and places are still available thanks to the recent investment into more boards. Anyone that thinks they would like to be a part of this, or learn a new skill, please feel free to call in. You could be the next Grand Master!
